THE SCREENING

Arizona law mandates substance abuse screening for individuals suspected of DUI. Approved DUI services providers conduct thorough assessments using standardized protocols to evaluate substance use history and impairment. These screenings help identify those in need of further evaluation, intervention, or treatment for substance abuse. Arizona’s proactive approach aims to address the root causes of impaired driving, promote rehabilitation, and enhance road safety. By intervening early and providing support, the state seeks to reduce future incidents and foster positive behavioral changes. The screening process aligns with Arizona’s commitment to public safety and tackling substance abuse within the context of DUI cases.

LEVEL II DUI EDUCATION

Arizona mandates a 16-hour DUI education program for convicted offenders to address drunk driving. The program raises awareness, knowledge, and responsible behavior to prevent future instances of impaired driving. It covers topics like alcohol’s effects, legal consequences, risks, and safety. Arizona aims to provide insights into dangers, promote reflection, and encourage positive changes. The program emphasizes responsible decision-making and alternative transportation options. It also serves as a preventive measure to reduce repeat offenses by empowering individuals and fostering resistance to driving under the influence. Arizona’s requirement reflects its commitment to combatting impaired driving, promoting safety, and instilling lasting behavioral changes.

LEVEL I DUI EDUCATION AND TREATMENT

Arizona’s DUI screening process determines appropriate intervention for DUI offenders. Level I DUI involves mandatory 16-hour DUI education and an additional 20 hours of treatment. This comprehensive approach reflects Arizona’s commitment to addressing substance abuse and promoting responsible behavior. Level I DUI targets moderate substance abuse, providing evidence-based practices for recovery. The 20-hour treatment component offers counseling, support, and coping mechanisms to address underlying causes. By combining education and treatment, Arizona equips individuals for long-term recovery, preventing repeat offenses and enhancing road safety through positive behavioral changes.

REVOCATION EVALUATION/APPLICATION PROCESS

There are instances where driving privileges can be revoked, requiring individuals to undergo an evaluation before they can regain their license. This evaluation serves as a crucial step in assessing the person’s ability to drive safely and responsibly. Conducted by a licensed substance abuse counselor (LISAC), the evaluation may involve various components such as a SASSI and an interview. The  purpose is to determine if the individual has resolved any underlying issues that led to the revocation and is now fit to operate a motor vehicle. Successful completion of the evaluation and meeting all necessary requirements required by ADOT are essential for reinstating one’s driving privilege in Arizona.

ADOT ONLY

When a person is pulled over for the suspicion of DUI, ADOT suspends their driving privilege for 90 days.  ADOT will allow the individual to drive again after the first 30 days of suspension if they complete a Screening. At MBHS, this screening applies to both ADOT and the court, if convicted.
